The idea of cheques actually comes from the ancient Romans, who are said to have used an early form of cheques known as “praescriptiones” over 2,000 years ago. Nowadays, cheques are most commonly used for payroll, which is the sum of all financial records regarding employee salaries, wages, bonuses and deductions, and for major financial transactions in which a card or cash cannot be used.

Cheques were actually first used by merchants from Mediterranean countries and date back 1,000 years. They were actually similar to modern cheques in that they were written documents instructing financial institutions to make payments to cheque holders.

Between 1118 and 1307, the Knights Templar introduced a cheque system which was used by pilgrims bound to the Holy Land. The pilgrims would deposit funds at one chapter house, then withdraw from another, simply by displaying a document written in a code which only Templars could understand.

That idea of personalized cheques actually continued, and is still heavily in use today. Companies can order cheques with any type of logo on them, including the company logo.
